The 400 and 500 series are identical sewing machines but in different 'houses'. This 401a is my favorite of all of the better ones. Remember they are all good but you can have a favorite and this is mine. A 401a is in our sewing room and it is the main go to machine. The 401a will make zig zag and straight stitches with ease and precision. It is largely all built in stitches with just five additional fashion discs added and included.

We search for worthy candidates to buy and then rebuild them into the fine systems they were designed to be. This one has most if not all important accessories and a complete manual with it on a CD disc.

The price of this well re-conditioned 401a is $265.00.

This is the end view showing the hand wheel. The built in motor is just inside and is directly geared to the hand wheel. This direct drive was a real winner for Singer and just made this machine the best.

The under side is clean and covered with this drip pan to keep the area under this sewing machine clean and free of oil. Oil is very important to a sewing machine but not good for fabric - so the drip pan. One finger nut removed drops the pan.

Right in front of the operator are these vital controls. Behind the word SINGER is the sewing light but above that are the round knobs (two of them together) that make up the many fashion stitches available to this nice sewing machine. To the right of the round knobs is the needle positioning lever. This needle sets to 5 different positions.

On the post near the hand wheel is the bobbin winder. It is so simple and easy to use and winds a just right bobbin with ease. The lever is what sets the stitch length and reverses the direction to back tack quickly.

Open the face plate door and find the directions to threading the top thread and threading the bobbin. While the door is open check for dry spots needing a little oil.

Slide the cover toward you and drop in a fresh bobbin. This is easy and very quick to do also.

Just as quickly as I could change the two knobs It would make a row of the stitches. It is fun to use and will add a lot to sewing.
