Industrial Treadles
Displayed in this album are the various industrial treadle irons being offered for custom treadle construction. The industrial irons have larger wheels to run faster and stronger than domestic sewing machine treadles. These irons are larger and made with a off-set between the treadle peddle and the needle. The operator sets in front of the needle and maintains a straight body position. Long hours in a factory would be less tiring.

This is not a stock Singer treadle iron color but it will look very sharp with the reddish wood stains available today. Black sewing machines on reddish top on a green treadle.

Every treadle moving part was opened, scrubbed bright metal clean and all worn parts replaced with still good parts so that the reassembled treadle, freshly lubricated, will race with the very sightest effort.

This large wheel on the industrial treadles turn the sewing machines faster and stronger. These treadles were used in early factories and by tailors that hand stitched before the early sewing machines.

Notice the off-set of the treadle from the drive wheel. This placed the operator in front of the needle and into a more comfortable body position for the long hours, at the sewing machines, demanded in the early factories.

This is a rather rare treadle made by Howe Sewing Machine Co. It is a little smaller than the Singers and still displays the off-set wheel to needle that the Singer displays. Here the wheel is set out side the frame.

The Howe treadle displays a taste of German design with the use of the foot rest and in another view a shelf for a oil container.

This is the shelf that gave the oil can a place to rest when not in use. Oil was very important to the treadle as well as the sewing machines.

One of the four legs is adjustable. A heavy spring within drives the foot down to find a level place to rest so the set screws could again be made tight. All legs had these wheels on one side and a place to fasten it to the floor if desired.

It appears the blank panel in the center of the treadle may have been a place to 'badge' the treadle for other buyers.

Notice this name panel is bolted into place. Easy to badge with another name. The only Howe mark to remain would be the seal on the treadle peddle.
